The Sedgwick County Juvenile Detention Facility is an 108 bed institution; the daily number of residents averages about 75 youth, ranging from 10 to 17 years old. Youth for Christ provides the facility Chaplain as well as chaplaincy team members who visit with youth on a weekly basis. There are weekly dorm specific Bible studies, Campus Life, and Chapel services provided by volunteers from different churches, all under the umbrella and training of YFC. These activities are also provided at the Juvenile Residential Facility and the Judge Riddel Boys Ranch. Prospective volunteers, for any of the juvenile facilities in Sedgwick County , are required to complete a county application in addition to our Youth for Christ volunteer application. Both applications can be emailed to you, or sent to you via regular mail. YFC also requires a nation-wide background check and a $15.00 fee to cover that cost. The County conducts their own check with state and local authorities. While the application process can seem very tedious, please remember that we serve bruised reeds and must make every effort to protect them as well as our volunteer staff. For your protection and the protection of the youth, YFC also requires that volunteers watch a video addressing the problem of sexual abuse of children. The video can be viewed at our office, and we will make every effort to work with your schedule. Serving incarcerated youth is a ministry for those who would rather pull weeds, but cannot get away from their desire to serve youth at risk of damage to themselves and others. Many of these youth do not have a father in the home, and do not have visitors. Consequently they are in need of wise, caring, patient and persevering adults who can speak life, the life that only Jesus can give them, to their desperate ears. |
